Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

Introduction

The play, featuring actors and puppets, takes us on board the Nautilus, the legendary vessel that is both a sea monster and a state-of-the-art ship commanded by Captain Nemo. Here, we find all of the characters from Jules Verne’s novel: Professor Aronnax and his loyal servant Conseil who, before being shipwrecked and becoming Nemo’s prisoners, had set off in pursuit of the famous giant narwhal on board the Abraham Lincoln together with the harpooner Ned Land. Captain Nemo, the epitome of a modern pirate, takes them against their will on a round-the-world voyage across the oceans, where scientific experiment is mixed with the poetry of the ocean’s depths. The actors, supported by a shoal of fish, take us on a journey to the heart of this literary masterpiece.

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea won the Molière Award for Visual Creativity in 2016 and the Critics Award for Best Set Design in 2016.

John Keating, the charismatic teacher who employs an innovative approach to teaching, instils in his pupils the best lessons one can learn: freedom, confidence and faith in a future that is shaped by our own decisions. Led by Stéphane Friess, who delivers a brilliant interpretation of a free-spirited and dedicated teacher, alongside a fantastic cast of young actors, Dead Poets Society offers a universal lesson which has not aged at all: carpe diem!Based on the film produced by Touchstone Pictures and written by Tom Schulman.Original production by Classic Stage Company.
