Jean-Michel Folon’s artwork "Les Roses", is a ceramic piece created in 1984 and comprising two panels affixed to the façade of the Carmes Chapel. The work was restored in 2022, and protective glass was installed in autumn 2023.
The Belgian artist Jean-Michel Folon, who had a studio on Quai Antoine I, completed several works in the Principality and played an important role in Monaco’s flourishing artistic life.
His work "Les Roses" was created to adorn the two imposing arches on the façade of the Carmes Chapel. It comprises painted and varnished tiles, depicting roses with embossed petals against a sunset background.
However, there were some gaps in the work: some of the rose petals had torn off and some of the tiles were damaged. The conservation and restoration work carried out in 2022 restored the original appearance and integrity of the work. In 2023, protective glass was fitted over the two panels to prevent damage without altering their unique character as envisaged by the artist.
