Introduction

The Heritage Institute, a government department established in 2017 within the Department of Cultural Affairs, is responsible for studying, protecting, conserving, restoring, promoting and imparting the national heritage to future generations.

The Institute drafts and updates inventories of both intangible and tangible cultural heritage held by the State. It also helps to identify and locate items of tangible cultural heritage.

The Heritage Institute is also responsible for organising the European Heritage Days in Monaco.

The European Heritage Days took place on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September in the Principality, attracting nearly 10,000 visitors with the theme of "Routes, networks and connections".

Restoration of François Brochet’s statues of St. Nicholas and the Virgin Mary

The statues, which have until now stood on either side of the altar at the Church of St. Nicholas in Fontvieille, depict St. Nicholas and the Virgin Mary. Created by François Brochet, these painted wooden sculptures were installed in 1989, the year the church was consecrated.

Securing "Roses" by Jean-Michel Folon

Jean-Michel Folon’s artwork "Les Roses", is a ceramic piece created in 1984 and comprising two panels affixed to the façade of the Carmes Chapel. The work was restored in 2022, and protective glass was installed in autumn 2023.
