The Heritage Institute, which preserves and promotes Monaco’s heritage, has restored the wall hangings located in Villa Girasole, thanks to support from the restoration team at La Réserve.

Restoration of wall hangings in Villa Girasole

Villa Girasole, a Belle Époque villa from the late nineteenth century, is home to the Albert II Foundation. One of its ground-floor rooms is decorated with stunning leather wall hangings. Dating from the nineteenth century, these hangings actually draw inspiration from the seventeenth-century wall decorations made in the Netherlands. They feature slightly raised designs covered with silver leaf, produced using a mould. They depict snails, birds, squirrels and putti – small, naked children resembling angels who are often associated with art from the Italian Renaissance period.

Damaged by time, sunlight and insects, the hangings have been fully restored and were rehung in their original location on 26 June 2024.

Restoration of François Brochet’s statues of St. Nicholas and the Virgin Mary

The statues, which have until now stood on either side of the altar at the Church of St. Nicholas in Fontvieille, depict St. Nicholas and the Virgin Mary. Created by François Brochet, these painted wooden sculptures were installed in 1989, the year the church was consecrated.
