Introduction
As part of the exhibition "AGORA - The Museum as a Meeting Place" held at Villa Sauber, the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco is presenting a collection of works from the Cantique des Oiseaux (Birdsong) series by Katia Kameli, who recently joined the museum's collective as part of the "Apprentis collectionneurs" programme.
A combination of sculpture, graphics, music and performance, Cantique des oiseaux (Birdsong) is a reinterpretation of a famous mystical tale written at the end of the 12th century by the great Persian poet Farîd od-dîn Attâr. This iconic Sufi tale depicts the journey of birds, led by a hoopoe, a symbol of wisdom, in search of the embodiment of the divine, named Sîmorgh.
For this performance, the stoneware 'bird instruments', created by Katia Kameli in collaboration with ceramicist Marie Picard, will come to life during a performance art piece at Villa Sauber, followed by a screening of Cantique des oiseaux - variation 2023, and a chance to meet the artist.
Katia Kameli, a Franco-Algerian artist and director, bases her work on a research approach: historical and cultural facts feed the multiple forms of her vivid and poetic imagination. She sees herself as a "translator", shedding light on world history, made up of permeable borders and reciprocal influences, in order to open up a reflective and generative view of the world. Her work is currently on display at the Centre Pompidou until 10 March, in an exhibition that echoes the work of Pierre Bourdieu and his images of Algeria in the exhibition Penser par l'expérience photographique. A monographic exhibition will also be on display this summer at the Chateauvert art centre in the Var.
Admission is free, subject to availability, to register, send an email to public@nmnm.mc.
