Simple forms, fractal figures, muted, dull or vibrant colours, prickly, downy, bristly or waxy sheaths, fleshy, velvety organs, extravagant architectures – cacti and succulents have been a source of fascination for centuries. The Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, in collaboration with the Musée YVES SAINT LAURENT Marrakech, which initiated the project in 2024, is today dedicating an exhibition to them, seen from both a botanical and artistic perspective.

Exhibition - Cactus

Introduction

Native to the “torrid zone” of our planet and indicators of an arid climate, cacti are ideal subjects through which to understand the gradual spread of tropical flora in the West, carried by expeditions, explorers, and the horticultural boom of the 19th century. With their outlandish forms, they challenge our conception of plant life, were quickly reproduced in a variety of botanical publications and entered the collections of prestigious gardens. Though deceptively easy to cultivate, these plants are regularly collected and have given rise to remarkable gardens across the planet, from California to the Canaries, via the Riviera. The exhibition pays particular attention to the Côte d’Azur, through historic and contemporary photographs, documents and drawings.

The unique aesthetic of cacti engaged the attention of many artists, particularly in the early 20th century, and especially during the interwar period. Their sometimes unusual originality made cacti and other succulents suggestive and inspiring motifs for architects, photographers, designers, artists, creators and filmmakers, who filled their visual worlds with their iconic forms. Few plant families have inspired so many artistic interpretations. This exhibition offers a broad overview, bringing together works as varied as an Eisenstein film, a Gufram coat stand, and a drawing created by David Hockney on an iPad!

Shifting seamlessly from scientific rigour to an artificial – sometimes even strange or unsettling – aesthetic, the exhibition escapes the confines of the museum’s interior, spilling out into the gardens of the Villa Sauber, transformed for the occasion into a spectacular cactus garden with the help of the Exotic Garden of Monaco..

To evoke the Mediterranean, means summoning up the extraordinary history of the many great civilisations shaped on its shores over the centuries. But it also means facing up to its future, which is more uncertain than ever. The various pressures associated with its use, population growth, pollution and global warming are all threats to its future, global warming are all threats to its unique biodiversity and ecosystem services. This brand new immersive and interactive exhibition "Méditerranée 2050" aims to encourage visitors to the Monaco ‘s Oceanographic Museum to take a new interest in the Mediterranean and become involved in its protection, through a space-time journey to 2050.

Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665) was the first painter to focus not simply on landscape, but on Nature, which he did with lyricism and increasing sensitivity over the course of his career. Given that Poussin founded a school, something of this ‘feeling for Nature’ was passed on to the generations that followed, for example, in the works of Gaspard Dughet and Claude-Joseph Vernet. But what of today? Although ecological worries are a major concern for our societies, are there any artists who still depict nature elegiacally? It is our aim to show that yes, indeed there are, by bringing together, on each of Villa Paloma’s floors, classical paintings with all manner of contemporary works: sculptures, installations, photographs, videos, films, paintings and drawings. And while these pairings for the most part represent a Franco‑Italian exchange, though not exclusively, they do so as a tribute to Poussin, who, though French, spent most of his career in Rome. The exhibition is in six sections – Storms and Nights; Forests and Gardens; Seascapes and Waterfalls; Deserts and Volcanoes; Mountains; Flowers and Butterflies – each offering a different perspective on what during Antiquity was called miracula naturae … the marvels of nature. With works by Roger Ackling, Robert Barry, Anne-Lise Broyer, Giorgio Andreotta Calò, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Christo et Jeanne-Claude, Thomas Demand, Gustave Doré, Gaspard Dughet, Latifa Echakhch, Tim Eitel, Ed van der Elsken, Ilse et Pierre Garnier, Nan Goldin, Andreas Gursky, Suzanne Husky, Mimmo Jodice, Pierre Joseph, Ange Leccia, Pierre Lesieur, Charles de Meaux, Fausto Melotti, Mario Merz, Sarah Moon, Giulio Paolini, Claudio Parmiggiani, Bruno Pélassy, Giuseppe Penone, Nicolas Poussin, Anting Qiu, Walter Robinson, Torbjørn Rødland, Anne Laure Sacriste, Christophe Sarlin, Pierre Thoretton, Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, Joseph Vernet, Marine Wallon…The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog published by Humboldt.Curated by Guillaume de Sardes Exhibition design: Christophe MartinImage: Nicolas Poussin, Landscape of Grottaferrata: Landscape with River God / Venus and Adonis (detail) Oil on canvas  75 × 199 cm Musée Fabre, Montpellier Méditérranée Métropole, Inv. n° 825.1.171 – Photo Frédéric Jaulmes

This richly illustrated, educational and interactive exhibition tells the story of the birth and evolution of our species, Homo sapiens, and of the entire human lineage known as Hominins. It traces the journey, through long migrations, of human beings who invented tools and mastered fire, before leaving the African cradle of humanity and eventually settling, for the past approximately 10,000 years, across the entire planet. These fascinating and open-ended questions are explored in this exhibition, which is further enriched by multimedia content (interviews, 3D views of prehistoric objects, quizzes, games, etc.).Like all exhibitions by Synops editions, From Toumaï to Sapiens is aimed at a wide audience and shares scientific knowledge in an educational and engaging way. Passionate about sharing knowledge, Synops editions design exhibitions that are both educational, interactive and immersive, intended for museums, media libraries, associations, science and technology culture centres and all types of public venues.
