Introduction

Olivier Vadrot lives and works in Beaune, Bourgogne. At a very early stage, his career was forged at the crossroads of numerous fields: architecture, design, exhibition design and curation, theatre and music. Alongside his studies at the Lyon School of Architecture, he embarked on the collective venture of Théâtre Pluzdank (1996–2001). He co-founded La Salle de Bains, a contemporary arts centre in Lyon (1999), and the Cocktail Designers group (2004), within which he came up with several listening devices for music labels (Le Kiosque électronique, 2004; Icosajack, 2007). His residency as a scenographer at Villa Médicis (2012–2013) marked an important turning point in his career.

His personal practice has asserted itself in recent years, returning to a focus on micro-architectural structures that can be used to bring people together (Faire c’est dire, 2017), shape the collective (Les Tribunes, 2015) and prompt debate (Cavea, 2016).

While some of these are nomadic, reproducible and ephemeral, reduced to their essential forms and made from inexpensive materials, others have become more permanently established in public spaces (Conversations, 2018; Orchestre, 2018; Les Fossiles, 2020). His first monograph, titled Mêlées, was published by Catalogue Général, Paris in 2020.

The LABs offer visitors the opportunity to explore the museum as a "laboratory" in which its roles (collecting, studying, disseminating, producing, conserving and transmitting) are the subject of reflection, experimentation and innovation. In 2015, the NMNM launched its first LAB and exhibited "Behind the Scenes of the Museum", followed by another LAB in 2018, where five artists were invited to redefine the museum through a new lens.In 2025, ahead of major structural renovations to the Villa Sauber, the NMNM will be prioritising its public engagement programmes, which focus on artists and unveiling their artistic expression. The works acquired since 2017 as part of the "Apprentis collectionneurs" programme will be exhibited alongside pieces from the heritage collections. Visitors will also be able to discover the works of Léna Durr and Éléonore False, artists who were recently invited to take up creative residencies.By inviting Olivier Vadrot to create a new architectural design, this LAB, conceived by Benjamin Laugier, will provide a space for discussion and collective experiences within the museum. A series of meetings, screenings and performances will be held throughout the exhibition, giving rise to new projects."La collection voyageuse", "le Nouveau Musée Numérique" and Léa Collet's current residency will be the subject of regular workshops, along with the "Écoletopie" project by the Smarin studio, who will be creating a mediation lounge.A collaborative publication will also be produced during the exhibition with Éditions Empire.
