Lecture – The birth of department stores (1852-1925) by Cécilia Auber

Introduction
Driven by the industrial and economic reforms pushed by Napoleon III, the second half of the nineteenth century saw the emergence of a new kind of shop: the department store.
These establishments, which were seen as temples to modernity, produced unprecedented economic and social disruption. Their commercial innovations helped to usher in consumer culture in France.
Department stores also played a key role in the spread of fashion, leading to the birth of the myth of the Parisian woman as the epitome of an elegant, independent woman and fashion ambassador.
By developing their own art studios, the stores reaffirmed the place of decorative arts in French society, celebrating a taste for beauty in everyday life.
Presented by Cécilia Auber, guide and lecturer in art and history.
