Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo
Introduction
Originally known as the "Orchestre du Nouveau Cercle des Etrangers" when founded in 1856, then as the "Orchestre National de l'Opéra de Monte-Carlo" in 1958, and finally as the "Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra" since 1980, the OPMC occupies a prominent place on the international music scene.
The remarkable ability to blend tradition and modernity makes the OPMC one of the leading orchestras when it comes to performing symphonic works from the orchestral repertoire, and when it comes to renditions of rare and contemporary pieces, or operatic and choreographic performances.
From 1856 to the present day, there has been a succession of permanent conductors under different titles (principal conductor, principal guest conductor, musical director, artistic and musical director): Alexandre Hermann, Eusèbe Lucas, Léon Jehin, Louis Ganne, Marc César Scotto, Victor de Sabata, Paul Paray, Henri Tomasi, Louis Frémaux, Edouard van Remoortel, Igor Markevitch, Lovro von Matacic, Lawrence Foster, James DePreist, Marek Janowski, Yakov Kreizberg and Gianluigi Gelmetti.
Kazuki Yamada has been the artistic and musical director of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra since the 2016/17 season.
Autumn 2010 saw the launch of the ‘OPMC Classics' label, with the production of five recordings conducted by Yakov Kreizberg and three conducted by Gianluigi Gelmetti. Kazuki Yamada continues the recording campaign, with four projects already released since 2017. The OPMC also contributes to recordings for prestigious labels (Warner, Bru Zane Label, etc.).
In addition to Monaco's orchestral season and collaborations with the Monte-Carlo Opera, the Monte-Carlo Spring Arts Festival and the Compagnie des Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the OPMC regularly features on the lineup at major French and international festivals, including Aix-en-Provence, Granada, Paris, Prague, Strasbourg, Montreux, Vienna, Orange, Dresden, Bonn, Leipzig, Ankara, Athens, Bad Kissingen, Dublin, Lisbon, Lyon, Rheingau, and La Roque d'Anthéron.
The OPMC performs a variety of musical styles at concerts and festivals and boasts collaborations with artists such as Marcus Miller, Raul Midon, Roy Hargrove, Leila Hathaway, Avishai Cohen, Stacey Kent, Jamie Cullum, Dame Shirley Bassey, and more recently with IAM, Hugh Coltman, Melody Gardot and André Ceccarelli.
Under the presidency of H.R.H. The Princess of Hanover, the OPMC benefits from the support and encouragement of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Prince's Government, the Société des Bains de Mer, and the Friends of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra Association.
