Introduction

This retrospective, entitled "Espaces ciselés", highlights the incisive style typical of this Monegasque artist whose work drew upon his family heritage, underpinned by the guidance of his father, an architect, to lead him along his own path to artistic independence. After the war, Clerissi gradually freed himself from the shackles of architecture to create works that symbolise both discipline and freedom. His urban landscapes, characterised by architectural precision and expressive lines, convey the juxtaposition of order and emotion. His watercolours, which are looser and more fluid, capture the uncertainty and fragility of life.

Blending different media with energy and creativity, Clerissi explores vibrant, ephemeral textures. Inspired by Utrillo, Dufy and Buffet, he creates an introspective world where his linework embodies his quest for self-improvement and freedom.

In partnership with the Pavillon Bosio "Décors" post-master’s programme.

This programme is aimed at art school graduates holding a DNSEP and is designed to support a group of professionals each year during their first experiences of scenography. It is based on paid commissions from the Pavillon Bosio's cultural partners.

Participants have access to the Pavillon Bosio's activities and facilities. Enrolment in the programme also entitles participants to apply for work placements.

  • Exhibition curator: Leah Friedman, curator, artist/scenographer (Pavillon Bosio alumn)
  • Artistic director: Nadia Omiecinski, daughter of Hubert Clerissi
  • Set designer: Maria Magdalena David and Illona Rougemond-Mosconi, artists/scenographers enrolled in the "Décors" programme at Monaco Art School - Pavillon Bosio
  • With support from Villa Arson

There will also be a series of workshops running alongside the exhibition.

From Thursday 20 February to Wednesday 12 March 2025 - 11am to 6pm.

Open to all, free of charge.

The LABs offer visitors the opportunity to explore the museum as a "laboratory" in which its roles (collecting, studying, disseminating, producing, conserving and transmitting) are the subject of reflection, experimentation and innovation. In 2015, the NMNM launched its first LAB and exhibited "Behind the Scenes of the Museum", followed by another LAB in 2018, where five artists were invited to redefine the museum through a new lens.In 2025, ahead of major structural renovations to the Villa Sauber, the NMNM will be prioritising its public engagement programmes, which focus on artists and unveiling their artistic expression. The works acquired since 2017 as part of the "Apprentis collectionneurs" programme will be exhibited alongside pieces from the heritage collections. Visitors will also be able to discover the works of Léna Durr and Éléonore False, artists who were recently invited to take up creative residencies.By inviting Olivier Vadrot to create a new architectural design, this LAB, conceived by Benjamin Laugier, will provide a space for discussion and collective experiences within the museum. A series of meetings, screenings and performances will be held throughout the exhibition, giving rise to new projects."La collection voyageuse", "le Nouveau Musée Numérique" and Léa Collet's current residency will be the subject of regular workshops, along with the "Écoletopie" project by the Smarin studio, who will be creating a mediation lounge.A collaborative publication will also be produced during the exhibition with Éditions Empire.
