Introduction
The Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival a major international festival, celebrates its 18th year.
These two weeks of live music at the Opéra Garnier in Monte-Carlo were created as a duo, making it even more special. The 2024 edition will take you along some of the most inspiring jazz paths, from tradition to contemporary influences, big band riffs and vibrant vocals.
We decided to open the festival with talented students from the Rainier III Academy; after all, they are the future of this genre. The following day sees the opening of a legendary evening with the Count Basie Orchestra, the big band behind the Kansas City style, and the Dal Sasso Big Band in a tribute to Chick Corea. This varied line-up also includes long-time friends such as the iconic Dee Dee Bridgewater and saxophonist Stefano di Battista, both having made memorable appearances on the same date. With the roots of jazz in mind, which has been enriched by so many styles, we embark on a sultry journey with Ayo and the Cape Verdean singer Mayra Andrade.
The diversity of these musical worlds is reflected in the pop-funk of British band Level 42 and the youthful sounds of Emile Londonien, a trio inspired by Jazz made in London. The party gets into full swing with the Cuban rhythms of Cimafunk, who cross over with the Afrobeat sounds of Seun Kuti on World Music Night. The festival culminates in the instrumental fusion of M & Thibault Cauvin and harpist-singer Sophye Soliveau. And let's not forget two charismatic voices: the emerging TikTok star Stella Cole and crooner Mario Biondi.
Live concerts at the Salle Garnier, plus pre-show and after-show performances in the Casino de Monte-Carlo rotunda, set up especially for the occasion, and two magnificent moments of jazz cinema: the screening of the film ‘Elevator to the Gallows’ in collaboration with the Audiovisual Institute of Monaco, followed by the Whiplash film-concert.
