Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo

Introduction

In 1985, the Compagnie des Ballets de Monte-Carlo was born thanks to the wish of H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, who wanted to enrol in this dance tradition in Monaco and its famous ‘Ballets Russes’. Initially directed by Ghislaine Thesmar and Pierre Lacotte, followed by Jean-Yves Esquerre, it was not until the arrival of Jean-Christophe Maillot in 1993 that the company gained a foothold on the international stage, thanks to Maillot’s world-renowned choreography. Jean-Christophe Maillot has also enriched the company's repertoire by welcoming international choreographers to work with this exceptional group of 50 dancers. In 2000, Maillot created the Monaco Dance Forum, an international dance festival the company regularly performs at. In 2011, under the Presidency of H.R.H. The Princess of Hanover, the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, directed by Jean-Christophe Maillot, brought three institutions together: the Compagnie des Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the Monaco Dance Forum and the Princess Grace Dance Academy. Creation, presentation, and training all take place in Monaco within the same framework, which is an unprecedented approach to promoting the art of choreography within the world of dance.
