Reinstallation and restoration of ceramic pieces by Roger Capron

Some works by the artist Roger Capron, which were installed on the beaches in Larvotto, have been restored and reinstalled in the Galerie des Salines, which provides a pedestrian link to the Exotic Garden in Fontvieille.

Reinstallation and restoration of ceramic pieces by Roger Capron

Roger Capron was a French ceramicist who contributed to the renaissance of ceramic art in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1968, he produced 29 glazed terracotta panels for the Larvotto Beach Resort. These large-scale works depicted fish, seaweed and crustaceans, formed from various raised patterns in tones of pink and white.

Removed in 2019 following the redevelopment of the Larvotto Beach Resort, twelve panels were restored and subsequently reinstalled in the public Galerie des Salines. After fifty years of being displayed in a public place, the works were dirty and damaged, requiring significant restoration work. A meticulous cleaning operation was carried out by the restoration team, who stuck back together the broken tile fragments, and also filled in and restored the gaps identified.

This operation was the result of collaboration between various government departments, including the Department of Public Works, the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Heritage Institute, the State Property Authority and the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco.
