Institut du Patrimoine

Institut du Patrimoine

Introduction

The Heritage Institute, a government department established in 2017 within the Department of Cultural Affairs, is responsible for studying, protecting, conserving, restoring, promoting and imparting the national heritage to future generations.

The main missions of the Heritage Institute are as follows:

  • To ensure the study, protection, conservation, restoration, enhancement and transmission to future generations of national heritage while taking into account Monaco's urban development policy
  • To develop legislative and regulatory provisions relating to the preservation of national heritage and to oversee their implementation
  • To carry out inventories of intangible and movable cultural heritage in State custody, and to keep them up to date
  • To monitor inventories and oversee their implementation by organisations involved in the preservation of intangible and movable cultural heritage
  • To contribute to the identification and location of elements of immovable cultural heritage
  • To prepare and design any measure to promote or implement the preservation of national heritage

European Heritage Days

Among its heritage enhancement and transmission initiatives, the Heritage Institute organises European Heritage Days (EHD) each year, on a theme jointly selected by the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

Heritage tours

In 2026, the Heritage Institute is launching “Au cœur de Monaco” (In the heart of Monaco), a programme of thematic guided tours dedicated to the districts of the Rocher (A Roca), Monte-Carlo and Mareterra. These tours, led by heritage tour guides, will enable the general public to (re)discover Monaco’s hidden heritage.
